Ah - right - an lj-cut is a device to take the majority of the stuff you post behind a tag so that those who want to can click on it to see more, but that helps make the friendspage view a bit friendlier for others.

The command you insert into your post is:
open-carat-symbol immediately followed by lj-cut text="put your description here" immediately followed by a close-carat-symbol

If you look at the FAQ that can be found here:

you'll find the special commands that can be used in lj :-)
